Episode 1: Presidio San Agustín del Tucsón (Length: 4:45, Released August 20)
The first episode explores the founding of Presidio San Agustín del Tucsón in 1775, the military stronghold built to defend Spain’s northern frontier. More than just adobe walls, the Presidio became the seed of a permanent community, anchoring Tucson’s place in history as one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the United States, with the presence of the Tohono O’odham people in the region for more than 4,500 years.
We trace the influence of the Catholic Church, from the missions of Father Eusebio Kino to the presence of the San Agustín Cathedral. The Church’s role in shaping culture, identity, and daily life intertwined faith with frontier survival.
Through historians, community leaders, and local voices, the episode reveals how the presidio and the Church together formed Tucson’s foundation — a place of sanctuary, strength, and spirit that still resonates in the city’s heart today.
